Collins holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering and is an Assistant Professor at the University of California, San Francisco.

She leads the Laboratory for Musculoskeletal Crosstalk, which studies how signals between adipose tissue and musculoskeletal tissues contribute to osteoarthritis susceptibility and pain.

Beyond Wear and Tear

Osteoarthritis was once commonly described as wear and tear caused by aging and repeated use of the joints. Researchers now know that this explanation is too simple.
Mechanical stress and previous injuries matter, but osteoarthritis is also influenced by biological processes both within and beyond the joint.

The research suggests that osteoarthritis may be more than a localized joint disease. Signaling molecules circulating in the bloodstream may affect cartilage, other joint tissues and the nervous system's processing of pain.
