Espen A. Haavardsholm has been elected as a new member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and Letters. This is recognition both for him and for the field of rheumatology.

Haavardsholm is a professor of rheumatology at the University of Oslo, head of research at Diakonhjemmet Hospital and head of the research center REMEDY. He is a central figure in Norwegian and Scandinavian rheumatology.

He has contributed to knowledge that has changed clinical practice and improved the treatment of patients with musculoskeletal diseases. Central to his work is the development of new treatment strategies and targeted follow-up.

Recognition for outstanding research at Diakonhjemmet Hospital

The Norwegian Academy of Sciences and Letters is one of Norway's foremost institutions for scientific recognition. Membership is granted to researchers who have made outstanding contributions to their field, with significance far beyond their own institution.

The election of Haavardsholm as a member is therefore not only a personal distinction, but also a recognition of research in rheumatology and musculoskeletal diseases. This is an area that affects many in the population, and which has great importance for both quality of life and the socio-economics.

Strengthens the link between research and clinic

Haavardsholm's work is characterized by clinical studies that are integrated into all patient care and clinical practice. As head of the REMEDY Center, he has been instrumental in building a research environment that develops new treatment strategies in clinical practice.

Membership in the Norwegian Academy of Sciences provides new opportunities to promote this type of clinically oriented research, both nationally and internationally. The goal is to ensure that new knowledge is put into use more quickly for the benefit of patients.

The selection was formally approved on March 9, 2026.
