Désirée van der Heijde, MD, is Professor of Rheumatology at the Leiden University Medical Center. The main focus of her research has been on outcome research, with the development of radiological as well as disease activity scoring systems. She has also been the main author of several cornerstone clinical trials particularly within spondyloarthritis.

Van der Heijde is a visiting professor in the REMEDY Center for treatment of Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Diseases, a center funded by the Research Council of Norway and the Olav Thon Foundation. Diakonhjemmet Hospital is the host institution for REMEDY. The Institute of Clinical Medicine at the University of Oslo, Oslo University Hospital, the MAGIC foundation and the Norwegian Rheumatism Association are partners.
