Would you like to test an app for gout?

Researchers at Diakonhjemmet Hospital are now testing the app MinUrinsyregikt. They want to find out if it works well for patients who are followed up by their GP. If you have gout and live in Norway, you can join.
The app is designed to help you lower uric acid levels in your body. The goal is to prevent attacks. The app is free for those who participate.
Five-year follow-up shows that you can become seizure-free if you receive the right treatment
The content is based on professional guidelines. The app was created together with both doctors and patients. It is easy to use and should provide you with support in your everyday life.
The app is only for patients in the ReMonit Gout study – usability study in primary care.
You get this in the app
Information and training
You will receive videos and simple information about the disease. You will learn what can trigger seizures and how to prevent and treat them.
Recording seizures, medications , and uric acid
You can record seizures, medications you take, and uric acid levels from blood tests.
Overview and reminders
The app gives you an overview of your uric acid levels, medications and attacks. It can remind you of medications and blood tests. The app notifies you if your uric acid levels are too high and when you should contact your doctor to assess whether you should adjust your medication dose.
To participate you must:
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Have access to a smartphone or tablet
- Understand Norwegian
- Have been diagnosed with gout by a doctor
- Have a uric acid level above 360 μmol/L (the blood sample must not be more than 14 days old)
- Have a prescription for uric acid-lowering medication
- Not have other serious illnesses (e.g. cancer, severe kidney disease, or dementia)
- Not be pregnant or breastfeeding
How can you join?
You must first book an appointment with your GP for the doctor to:
- Check if you have gout
- Check for tophi (visible deposits of uric acid crystals under the skin)
- Take a blood test to measure uric acid levels
- Writing a prescription for uric acid-lowering medication
After your doctor's appointment, call: 47 88 10 74 (Monday-Friday). A study coordinator will check if you can participate and give you more information about the study. If you participate, she will help you get started with the app.
What does participating in the study mean for you?
You will test the app for three months. There will be two rounds of questionnaires. One before you start and one after you have tested the app.
YourGP will also answer a questionnaire about your treatment during the trial period. This includes your uric acid levels from blood tests, seizure prevention and uric acid-lowering medication and dosage. We also ask about any changes in your health and the doctor's experiences with app-supported treatment.
You will receive the same follow-up from your GP as those who do not use the app. The app is an addition to give you better support to prevent new attacks.
The doctor determines the treatment and the medication dose.
You will not be paid to participate in the study, and you will pay the usual deductibles at your GP.
