On Wednesday, March 26, the new modular building at the REMEDY research center was officially opened by hospital director Kari-Jussie Lønning. The research environment at Diakonhjemmet Hospital has thus gained 400 long-awaited square meters, with modern facilities.

Better working environment in modern premises

The building now houses 23 open-plan office spaces. In addition, there are two large meeting rooms, four quiet rooms, changing rooms with shower facilities and a social zone with a kitchen and coffee machine.

Kjetil Bergsmark, head of the Department of Rheumatology, Outpatient Clinic and Research, welcomed the event.

– We are very satisfied with the solution and see that this gives researchers better working conditions and more opportunities for interaction, he said, among other things.

The Journey to the Apple Garden

Through a series of photos, we gained insight into how the Apple Garden has become a reality.

“This gives us a welcome boost and paves the way for even better research work,” said Espen A. Haavardsholm when he gave this presentation. He leads REMEDY and is the head of research at the hospital.

Espen A. Haavardsholm emphasized that the proximity to the clinical environment at the hospital provides good opportunities for collaboration and development.

A building of great importance

The building has already had a major impact on the research environment at the hospital after it was lifted into place in December 2024.

Kaj Boland has been a key player in the establishment of Eplehagen. He is the head of Community Services at the Diakonhjemmet Foundation. He was duly thanked for his efforts and the good cooperation in connection with the establishment.

– We worked for a long time to find a good solution for the expansion, and now we see that this works well. The location, close to both the outpatient clinic and the researchers in Villaen, is a great advantage, said Kaj Boland after the opening.

He also pointed out that the garden should be restored after the five years have passed.

Now the garden is ready for a tour

The working group for Eplehagen is led by Elisabeth Røssum-Haaland. She has had a particular focus on creating a good working environment through adaptations within ICT, furnishings and logistics.

– Now the outdoor areas are ready for a change, with a terrace and planting, she says.

During the event, she was awarded well-deserved honors for her efforts in leading the project on behalf of the hospital:

"Well done," said Kjetil Bergsmark, when he thanked Elisabeth Haaland for her efforts with Eplehagen.

Official opening

Hospital Director Kari-Jussi Lønning emphasized the importance of the new building for research – and how crucial research is for professional development.

– The research at the hospital and REMEDY is a spearhead in the development of rheumatology, she said.

The close connection to the clinic makes it possible to quickly translate research results into better treatment for patients, said Kari-Jussie Lønning in connection with the opening.
