Communication is an increasingly important part of research

With the REMEDY center's goal of research to improve patient care, communication is essential to shorten the time from when the result is available to when it benefits the patients.

This overview and plan should be a working tool for deciding channel choices for different messages to reach the desired target groups. The individual projects' milestones form the starting point for communication activities.

Background

REMEDY is a research center for clinical treatment (FKB) in rheumatology and musculoskeletal disorders (RMDs). The purpose is to improve the treatment of patients through clinical research. This must be communicated to relevant stakeholders so that scientific findings benefit patients.

Communication is an important part of the research process, from the start to possible implementation in the clinic. To be successful, the projects must communicate well with its various target groups in addition to exposing the stakeholders to current information.

Scientific meeting places and scientific publications are essential arenas for science sharing and networking. In order to implement important research results as quickly as possible, the stakeholders must become aware of the projects before the results are known. Strategic communication efforts, beyond the traditional arenas, will contribute to the purpose of the centre.

Purpose of the communication work

Contribute to relevant target groups and stakeholders becoming familiar with new clinical research so that patients receive the best possible treatment

This will happen through communication measures that contribute to

· update people with RMDs, their relatives and healthcare professionals in the field

· increase awareness of REMEDY's ongoing projects and contribute to REMEDY's good reputation

· make REMEDY's results known to patients, researchers and decision-makers

· facilitate academic and financial collaborations

· raise awareness of unmet need in RMDs

· strengthen the sense of community and familiarity with the centre's various activities for employees and partners in REMEDY (internal communication)

Communication strategy

o The communication work must be practiced within the framework of sustainability and the EU's recommendations relating to scientific impact, societal impact and innovation impact

o Research results and new treatment methods must be communicated in an up-to-date and comprehensible manner for various target groups and stakeholders.

o Each project must have a communication plan to build awareness of the studies and the REMEDY centre

o Collaboration partners' existing channels must be used to communicate research results and new treatment methods

o Use the stakeholders' channels to communicate research results and new treatment methods

o Own website www.remedy-senter.no , LinkedIn, twitter, newsletter and press releases

o REMEDY's communication must be co-ordinated, clear and uniform

o Consistent use of style, tone, theme and graphics is important to ensure a strong sender identity across efforts, logo/design is based on REMEDY's graphic profile NB: link to downloadable profile at https://www.remedy-senter.no /

Communication plan for dissertations

All dissertations must follow a communication plan belonging to the individual companies' policies.

Evaluation of communication effects

Have we achieved the desired effects of the communication work?

It must be assessed against media coverage, newsletters, posts, likes and views on social media, participants in webinars and seminars and user surveys and so on.

This must be linked to ongoing registration of publication and dissemination activities, online form etc. against the Norwegian Research Council.

Practical

· Link to year wheel with the most important events for REMEDY

· Link to phone list in xcel:

o contact persons within REMEDY by mobile and e-mail

o communication contact persons, both DS and partners, mobile and e-mail

o management in REMEDY, wp-leads, project managers - achieve quick contact in case of inquiries from journalists etc

Communication plan for the individual projects/studies

A communication plan with tentative dates must be drawn up for each project, in collaboration with the communication advisor.

During each project that includes patients, particularly suitable patients must be registered so that they can be contacted on a later occasion, for media purposes etc. This must be in accordance with the GDPR.

At each milestone, the project manager must assess whether it is appropriate to release information, before contacting a communications advisor to take measures, such as updating the website, preparing a press release, newsletter content, taking pictures, preparing illustrations, SoMe posters, etc.

Before each publishable discovery and major publication, the project manager must provide the communications advisor with a text base for press releases and communication in preferred, accessible channels as soon as possible.

Posts in social media (SoMe) are tagged with #remedysenter and #rmd #rmds and other tags for searchability
